I’m sharing details from my recent trip to Vermont. It really is such a beautiful place, especially in the winter. Among all the things to do, skiing is definitely at the top. One of the advantages of living in New England is that ski country is literally in your backyard. A group of friends and I visited Chester for a girl’s weekend. I finally got to ski for the first time. I can’t believe I had never gone before, because it was a lot of fun. I will definitely be taking more lessons in the future to improve my skills.
From Boston it was about a 2.5 hour drive to Chester. We stayed at a cozy little antique stone house right in the heart of Chester Village. Check out our Airbnb here. One benefit of renting a house, was that we got to cook a yummy brunch before our ski lessons in the afternoon. I found this rustic little bakery, Baba A Louis, that was within walking distance from our house. I picked up some of their famous freshly baked bread for brunch. They also custom made a scrumptious maple caramel cake for the birthday girl.
It was a 20 minute drive to Okemo Mountain Resort for our ski lessons. I would definitely advise leaving yourself plenty of time to get there. On our way to the resort, we got really turned around. Cellphone service was spotty and the GPS wasn’t working. We were actually late for our lesson, but the people at the resort were so gracious and kind and let us join late. Our instructor was super friendly and knowledgable.
Afterward, we stopped by the ski lodge where we warmed up with specialty hot chocolates. I ordered their Kahlúa hot chocolate. They also had an Amaretto one which I would try if we go back. It would be easy enough to replicate them at home too.
We were all pretty wiped after a couple of hours out in the snow so we rested up before dinner time. At the recommendation of our Airbnb host, we ate dinner at The Free Range Restaurant. Besides skiing, eating here was the highlight of our weekend. Their food was delicious and our server was awesome. We even met the owner who had lived in Boston for several years. Our experience was so great, that we changed our Sunday brunch plans and ate there again in the morning. The chef made these cinnamon roll pancakes that were mouth-watering good.
Overall, it was a memorable weekend. It would have been nice to stay an extra day, but we had to get back to Boston to see the Patriots win the Superbowl 😉 I hope this isn’t my last time visiting southern Vermont.
