Happy New Year! I can’t believe we are already in the second week of January. The beginning of the year is a special time. For many people the new year serves as a blank slate and a fresh start. Whatever happened in the previous year is past and you can start again with renewed focus and energy. With 2017 in full swing, now is a great time to reflect and set some goals for the year.
Personally, I have been thinking about what goals I want to prioritize this year. Maintaining a regular exercise routine is one of my main goals for 2017. Setting the goal is the easy part. Following through on those goals is the hard part. I think we’ve all experienced the initial excitement when we set a goal only to find ourselves disappointed a year later when we realize we’ve made no progress. What steps can we take to make sure we maintain forward momentum? A lot of it is will power. If you want something badly enough, you’ll work for it. In addition, here are some strategies that I’ve found have helped me stick with my goals.
If I said I wanted to train to win the Boston Marathon this year, boy would I be disappointed come April. Even if I ran everyday from now till the marathon, winning first place would not be a realistic outcome. Instead, try to set a more realistic goal, say, to run at least 2 times a week. When I’ve actually achieved a goal, it motivates me to keep on going.
Team work makes the dream work. Partner up with similar minded people who share similar goals. Find a buddy who will encourage you and most importantly keep you to your word.
Just because you have an end in mind doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the process. This past week, I went out and bought myself some new workout clothes to celebrate my exercise commitment. When I realized the gym wasn’t working for me, I found a workout I could have fun with. Don’t be afraid to experiment until you find something that energizes you to meet your goals.
I hope you found this helpful. I’d love to hear what your goals are and what helps you stick with them.
